Phentermine is a powerful dieting formula combining multiple weight loss benefits to help you get the slim body you’ve always wanted
Phentermine gives you the power of multiple weight loss supplements in just one pill.
Phentermine is in the class of drugs called “anorectics”, also known as appetite suppressants, and has been used consistently for medical weight management since it was first approved in 1959. Phentermine is indicated for short term use (a few weeks) for patients with an initial BMI* of 30 or more (obese) or 27 or more (overweight) with at least one weight-related condition such as controlled high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol and should be used in combination with regular exercise and a reduced-calorie diet.
The exact mechanism(s) for this suppressant effect is/are unknown, although phentermine is thought to act by increasing the number of various neurotransmitters (norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, and possibly others) in the spaces between nerve cells in the brain. When these chemicals are increased, the feeling of hunger is minimized.
The limited usefulness of this drug class (anorectics), including Phentermine, should be measured against possible risk factors inherent in their use.
INDICATION
Phentermine hydrochloride USP 15 mg and 37.5 mg tablets, CIV is a prescription medicine used for a short period of time (a few weeks) for weight reduction and should be used together with regular exercise and a reduced-calorie diet. Phentermine is for adults with an initial BMI* of 30 or more (obese) or 27 or more (overweight) with at least one weight-related medical condition such as controlled high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. The limited usefulness of this drug class (anorectics, should be measured against possible risk factors inherent in their use.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Don’t take Phentermine™ if you have a history of cardiovascular disease (e.g., coronary artery disease, stroke, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, or uncontrolled high blood pressure); are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor drug (MAOI) within the past 14 days; have an overactive thyroid, glaucoma (increased pressure in the eyes), agitation or a history of drug abuse; are pregnant, nursing, or allergic to the sympathomimetic amines such as Phentermine.
Taking Phentermine with other drugs for weight loss is not recommended. Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), a rare fatal lung disease, has been reported in patients who had taken a combination of phentermine and fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine for weight loss. The possible association between phentermine use alone and PPH cannot be ruled out. Patients should report immediately if they experience any decrease in the amount of exercise that they can normally tolerate, shortness of breath, chest or heart pain, fainting, or swelling in the lower legs.
Serious heart valve problems or diseases have been reported in patients taking a combination of phentermine and fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine for weight loss. The possible role of phentermine has not been established, therefore the possibility of an association between heart valve disease and the use of phentermine alone cannot be ruled out.
If your body becomes adjusted to the maximum dose of phentermine so that its effects are experienced less strongly, the maximum dose should not be exceeded in an attempt to increase the effect.
Caution is advised when engaging in a potentially hazardous activity such as driving or operating machinery while taking phentermine. Phentermine has the potential to be abused. Using alcohol with phentermine may result in an adverse drug reaction.
Phentermine can cause an increase in blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, even if it’s mild. If you are taking medicines for type 2 diabetes, your doctor may have to adjust these medicines while taking phentermine.
Some side effects of phentermine that have been reported include pulmonary hypertension, valvular heart disease, palpitations, increased heart rate or blood pressure, insomnia, restlessness, dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, and changes in sexual drive. These are not all of the potential side effects of phentermine. For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
To report negative side effects of prescription drugs, contact FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or visit www.fda.gov/medwatch.
*Body Mass Index (BMI) measures the amount of fat in the body based on height and weight. BMI is measured in kg/m2.
Phentermine is an amphetamine-like prescription appetite suppressant used for weight loss.
First approved in 1959, phentermine is the most-prescribed weight loss medication in the United States to treat together with diet and exercise obesity.
Phentermine activates the central nervous system and stimulates the release of certain neurotransmitters like dopamine, epinephrine (adrenaline), and norepinephrine (noradrenaline). As a result, the central nervous system induces a “fight or flight”-like reaction, which causes increased heart rate, sweating, lack of appetite, and extra energy.
In the United States and Latin America, most phentermine-based weight loss pills contain phentermine hydrochloride as their main ingredient.
Phentermine is a class IV controlled substance, so it is only available under a doctor's prescription.
This weight loss medication is an option for patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2, which puts them in the “obese” range. Phentermine is also available to individuals with a BMI of 27-29.9 kg/m2 plus a weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or controlled hypertension.
However, this medication is not appropriate for all overweight and obese patients. There are many contraindications for phentermine use, including, but not limited to the history of cardiovascular disease, history of addiction, history of agitated states, or current/recent use of certain medications or supplements.
Treatment Duration
Phentermine is intended as a short-term treatment as it is potentially habit-forming. It should only be taken for 3 months at a time. This recommendation is based on the original drug trials in which participants were monitored over 12 weeks, and the safety of more prolonged medication use was not assessed. However, some doctors will prescribe phentermine for more extended periods, or prescribe it several times within a specified period with month-long breaks between each period. Such a treatment plan must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Dosage: Phentermine weight loss pills are available in both tablet and capsule form, in doses ranging from 15 – 37.5 milligrams.
Phentermine is a highly effective weight loss medication, but it also has a long list of potential side effects.
Serious reactions to phentermine, which may be symptoms of a potentially fatal Heat or lung problem, include:
However, most people experience only side effects. The most commonly reported reactions are dry mouth, insomnia, constipation, and headache.
Most patients report fewer side effects as the treatment progresses. Lower dose pills or alternate schedules can also help alleviate the bothersome reactions faster.
Is Phentermine Safe?
Phentermine is an FDA-approved medication and is generally safe when taken as prescribed.
Phentermine, like all other medications, can cause side effects. However, when doctors prescribe a weight loss drug such as phentermine, it is because the benefits of losing weight to reach a healthy BMI outweigh the possible side effects.

Dosage should be individualized to obtain an adequate response with the lowest effective dose. The usual adult dose of phentermine 15 mg is one tablet two times a day 30 minutes before meals. The usual adult dose of phentermine 37.5 mg is one tablet one time a day in the morning. This tablet is scored to facilitate administering ½ of the usual dosage for patients not requiring the full dose. Phentermine hydrochloride is not recommended for use in pediatric patients 16 years of age or younger. Late evening medication should be avoided because of the possibility of resulting insomnia.
It’s important to know your BMI*. Find the box where your height and weight intersect in the chart below to determine your BMI. If the number falls within a shaded area, ask your doctor if Phentermine may be right for you.
